It's been too long since you've heard from me here! I've recently deleted both FB and Instagram, deciding ultimately that both platforms have become too politicized for me. It was a somewhat difficult decision since it started out to be such a great way to keep in touch with family and friends and I've had some success in marketing my art business that way. Unfortunately, it has become a source of anxiety in my life and I've decided that to concentrate more on my blog/website and email list. (please email me privately to join my email list where I regularly let my patrons know what's going on in my art business/shows/sales etc)

Kind of a diverse group of paintings but these are some personal ones for me, and so I'd like to share them with you here on my blog. The marvelous view that I've translated into an oil painting of the Cimarron Mountain Range is mine from my living room sliding glass door. This view reminds me daily how fortunate I am that I'm able to live in such a glorious place. It changes with every hour, as the sun comes up from behind those mountains, illuminates first the trees and landscape in the foreground, then ultimately the alpenglow appears on them for a very few precious minutes at the end of the day. My intention is to have painted the range in every season!

The old woman in the second painting above is my sweet Oma! (german for grandmother) She had this sweet parakeet that she called her "Schnookie". The bird had a cage, but he was mostly free to fly around the house and even drank soup from Oma's kitchen table where she warned him not to "burn his schnabel!" (beak) My eldest sister took the photo reference when she lived with my grandmother in Brooklyn in around 1978. I've entered this one in an upcoming California Art Club exhibit. I hope the jurors find this couple as captivating as I do!

The lower image is going to be entered in another California Art Club exhibit, "Mars: An Artistic Mission" My son, AJ is the subject. He was my choice for a "fictional future space traveler" because he's always had such a fascination with and a healthy respect for space. Using him as a subject however was a bit challenging because of our distance; AJ lives in Queens New York, and I'm here in Colorado! At my request, AJ sent me photos that would match the lighting and position of the helmet reference I had in mind for the painting. I imagined a future where young people would travel regularly within our galaxy and they might even keep momentos (stickers) from places they've traveled on their helmets. (the way people in the early to mid 1900's used to commemorate their travels with "luggage stickers") In "reality", on February 18, 2021, the Mars 2020 spacecraft-Perseverance-will land at Jezero Crater on the red planet!

I hope you enjoyed this little peak into the Tin Cabin Studio. Ideas of future posts are already flooding my mind! Stay tuned for more!

Ritahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14952480892886357601noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1248199718444897779.post-21653116454791217942016-04-08T11:47:00.002-07:002016-04-08T11:47:42.717-07:00Still Available Borrego Springs Plein Air Invitational Work:Pictured here are Available Borrego Springs Plein Air Paintings. Many of the artists stayed with "host families", who graciously shared their homes, and even helped us with locating some iconic and in some cases hard to find locations to paint. At the end of the week, the Borrego Art Institute showcased over 100 brand new plein air paintings! Pictured here are most of the paintings I produced. When the show is over, (March 31st) I'll post my remaining (unsold) paintings on my website for sale. If you get a chance to visit the desert before the end of the week, you are in for a treat! The Borrego Art Institute is a beautiful state of the art building in the center of town, at Christmas Circle. Here's the link to their website http://www.borregoartinstitute.org
"Drawing Buddies" is 8" x 10", and depicts three of my young drawing students. I've enjoyed teaching an after school enrichment program now for several years, and have been continually impressed with and inspired by the freshness and creativity of the children. I hoped to convey their childlike approach to drawing, with eagerness and determination in each of their faces. Drawing can be such a stimulating and rewarding activity, and one that I like to share and encourage in children. I stayed with my gracious niece and her family, who selflessly schlepped me from location to location to paint their area. My son (pictured in my studio piece, "Take My Hand") even visited from nearby New York! The weather couldn't have been more perfect, and I had a great time!
Borrego Springs is a beautifully preserved National Natural Landmark. In fact it's the largest Desert Park in the United States! The paintings I personally created were a joy to paint, and my hope is that you enjoy viewing the body of work that all of the artists help to create this past week, and bring one or two paintings home with you! Here are some of mine in progression. The invitational is sponsored by the Borrego Art Institute, and 50% of proceeds from sales go to support childrens' art programs at the Institute. The Invitational artwork will be displayed and available for sale until March 31, 2015
The week was very enjoyable, painting side by side with the other invited painters; many of whom were already good friends and some became new friends. The weather was glorious for painting; some sunny, and some hazy days. I'm posting just a bit of the week's work below. Here I am painting an overcast version of the ferris wheel at the Fun Zone, which was a short ferry ride across the harbor. While I painted, people enjoyed their day; riding the ferris wheel or jumping on the bungie/jump trampoline or getting in line for a harbor cruise.
This one, painted on Monday morning I called "Bay Front View". Even though I brought my iPod, full of all my favorite music, I enjoyed listening to the sound of the water splashing against the boats and the beach-goers chatting as they passed on the sidewalk behind me, often asking me for my "autograph" for their Debra Huse Gallery "Passport". The passports were to be signed by all the participating artists during the week, then turned in to the Gallery on Saturday for a drawing to win a free painting. This was a great idea, and the community participated! Even kids enjoyed the game of finding the artists stationed around the island on any given day, and we artists appreciated the interest!

I am witness to the fact that the brothers had absolutely no adult help to create this piece, "The Capitol" in about an hour's time! I chose to paint the fire engine at the end of Marine Avenue for the Brush Off. This is a gem of an engine, dating to 1920! It was a thrill to paint, and happily the painting was sold at the ceremony directly after the Brush Off! I am especially grateful to the fireman who accompanied me and my painting buddy, Kristen Olsen while we worked (the fire engine could not be left un-supervised) and to the captain working that day who graciously moved his truck to a nearby (but maybe not so legal) parking spot so we could stand in front of the engine. Who knew that parking here in Balboa Island for the fire fighters is as difficult as for us civilians and they even get tickets!

The "Quick Draw" took place on the thursday before the Fourth of July. A "quick draw" is actually not a "drawing" but an organized painting competition, where the invited artists are asked to paint in a designated area for a designated amount of time. (this one was two hours, beginning at 10:00am sharp). I chose to paint the side of this restored home/restaurant behind the park, where I spied and did some quick sketching and note taking to record a beautiful old pick up truck with it's delivery trailer behind. (We couldn't technically begin our paintings until 10am, and this delivery was made around 9:30am; which left me without "live" reference while I painted) Here is a photo of "Morning Delivery" when it was almost finished, and sold at auction to a very sweet collector after the event.

We stayed at the Telluride Lodging, and happened to see these fabulous kayaks parked pretty consistently outside our rental unit. Both my husband and I noticed the view as the morning light streamed from behind the adjacent buildings and over the tops of the mountain beyond. I was surprised and delighted that the owner of the kayaks (and an absolute gem of a human being; in his retirement, Bill volunteers his time and the use of his kayaks to helping the disabled enjoy water sports in Telluride) was watching me paint it, and later "Bill Langford's Kayaks" was purchased as a gift for him from a sweet family friend at the Artists' Reception. It's meeting people like this, and touching the lives of people who are such a huge contribution to our world that make this whole "plein air circuit thing" a thrill for me!

It's hard to relay my eagerness to secure a place in this venue, but suffice it to say that it's certainly consumed my thoughts for days and a week later, I've finished! Browsing the internet for photos from movies, events and old paintings for inspiration, I came across photos from "reenactments", where I found the most inspiration. From bits and pieces of several of them, "Distracted" was created.

I can't help but think about the people who witnessed the actual event, including Simon the Cyrene. It becomes clear to me that this Simon was not such a "willing" participant. He seems to have been just "traveling" through town when this horrific event took place. Both in Matthew 27:32 and Mark 15:21 he was "forced"; and in Luke 23:21 he was "seized" to help with the cross.
Growing up in a Catholic home, I guess you could say I was "forced" to attend Mass with my family on Sundays and go to Catholic school for 12 years. (Believe me, I used those words and resented it at many times in my young life!) Resentment caused me to walk away from my faith for years and do things "my own way". Even though in later years, I go to a non-denominational Christian church here in Carlsbad, I am forever grateful for the parents I had who shared their Catholic faith with me and my brothers and sisters. I'm grateful I was "forced" to be a participant and to learn the story of the bible because in this world there are so many distractions! As I painted, I imagined being each of the members of the "crowd". I saw myself in every one; worried about my own comfort and protection, taking photos of events so I can "share" them, completely "missing" the point, "talking" while I should be "listening", not able to grasp what price was paid for my soul.

This will be an interactive stations of the cross that will take place Monday through Friday of Holy Week, from 10:00am-7:00pm. Over a dozen local artists will have contributed pieces that uniquely express each station, from the Last Supper to Jesus being placed in the tomb. It will be a silent and self-led experience that may take anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour to complete.
I'm honored that two of my oil paintings were selected for the exhibit, which will run from February 22-April 3, 2014.
"High Tide", one of my "larger" paintings depicts a view at the San Clemente Pier, inspired by a plein air painting I produced for last summer's San Clemente Paint Out. The plein air was awarded an "Honorable Mention" ribbon, and was sold at the Gala Reception following the paint out. I still had my photo reference, and of course the experience of painting and studying the scene for my plein air certainly helped me to create this larger piece.
"Young Art Critics" was created from photo reference. It depicts two of my favorite "20-somethings" enjoying a recent art exhibit. It thrills me to think that our next generation is appreciative of and actively participating in the arts! I personally can't wait to see what contributions these two talented girls will produce in the next few years!

Two of my recent paintings, inspired by the Southern California landscape, have been juried into the Randy Higbee's 6" Squared Exhibit! The first one, "Dolphin Watch" was from a quick snap shot I took with my phone while I was painting in Laguna Beach. I had set up my easel to paint a view of the bridge that leads from Dana Point into Laguna, when I noticed three friends walking on the beach behind me. I watched them for a while and was drawn to their gestures; looking out to the ocean and talking about what they were witnessing. I'm just guessing that it was dolphins they were enjoying but I couldn't help but snap a photo to record it in my mind's eye.
The second painting, "Protected" was inspired by a trip to Aliso & Wood Canyons Park with my husband and his friend. They rode their mountain bikes on the marked but rugged paths, and I planned to walk to an inspiring spot to paint "en plein air". In a few short minutes from the parking lot where we parted, I came across this beautiful landscape, with the morning light falling gently over the hills. I was struck at how "untouched" by humans it remained, with a chain link fence guarding it. I wondered about all the wildlife the chain link fence was protecting, (and frankly wondered about my own protection a bit too) and decided to include it in my painting.
What an experience this was! I was invited just a few months ago, as a result of winning the Grand Prize at the LPAPA "Best of Plein Air" Juried Exhibit. Nervous as ever to paint along side some of the most respected plein air painters of our time, I showed up! I was ready for the "quick draw" event (where the invited artists have 2 hours to paint a scene in a designated area) In this case, it was the "Treasure Island" area, behind the Montage Resort in South Laguna. I had set up a plan with my daughter to model for me, seated on a bench over-looking the coastline below. (Of course it was my hope that it would be a beautiful and sunny day) Well, it was sunny (for about twenty minutes!), then the sun went into hiding. Luckily, I had taken photo reference from my practice that I was able to conjure up in order to emulate the beautiful sunlight on her dress and hat. The two hours were over in a flash, and all the artists' paintings were hastily framed and hung for an auction at the beautiful Aliso Creek Inn & Golf Course Resort. I was thrilled that my painting, "Weekend Repose" was sold to a wonderful couple!

The rest of the week, the weather couldn't have been more cooperative, the LPAPA Organization literally catered to us artists; providing meals at several paint out excursions and great lectures, my generous host family provided a comfortable and friendly place for me to rest, and I enjoyed painting the beautiful light in Laguna Beach!
The Sheridan Arts Foundation (and for Aspen, together with the Wheeler Opera House) hosted nationally recognized plein air artists, (including yours truly), to spend a week in each town capturing the light, color and unique character of this breathtaking region. Both historic opera houses benefitted from the sales, which were good! Below are two of the paintings I created during our visit to Colorado, and are still available:
My husband and I drove to the events all the way from Carlsbad, California and stayed right in town for the Telluride event. I hooked up a trailer to my bicycle, and tooled around town (without regard to finding parking, etc) and painted 2 or 3 paintings a day! The quick draw, an otherwise stressful event, was a success for me too! I painted the front of the Sheridan Opera House and the piece sold to a nice couple who are planning to give it to their daughter as a gift. Telluride is a sweet little town; the people are friendly and there's a great view at every corner! We moved on to Aspen (neither my husband or I had ever been there) and it was a grand town! The historical architecture is something to see, many of the buildings built in the late 1800's. This was another beautiful town to paint (me), fish (my husband) and spend time. The quick draw for Aspen not only also sold to a lovely woman, but won the First Place Award! I painted the hillside from a little restaurant in town called The White House Tavern. My husband and I were treated to dinner there by the management that night and it was a WONDERFUL meal (even before we found out that they were treating us!-truly I highly recommend it!) It was humbling, and a real thrill to be awarded among such other accomplished artists and quite a pleasant surprise! Additionally, since I was a "top seller" in Aspen, I am guaranteed an invitation for 2014, and you can bet I'll be applying to the Telluride Plein Air Event again! Feel free to contact me about the purchase of these Colorado plein air paintings, visit my website to see all of the "still available" Colorado paintings, or my facebook page to see many photos from the weeks of events!Ritahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14952480892886357601noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1248199718444897779.post-16303272133932235062013-06-22T04:02:00.000-07:002013-06-22T04:02:14.101-07:00"Paint San Clemente" Plein Air Competition; June 15-23, 2013June 15th, 2013 the "Paint San Clemente" event began with a three hour "quick draw" in the area surrounding the San Clemente Community Center and Art Gallery. "Quick draw" is a timed event, where artists paint a designated area. The canvases of all the participating artists were stamped at 12:30pm, then we were given three hours to compose, paint, and frame our piece. Midday is not my favorite time to begin a painting, but I was able to produce a piece that I was pleased enough with to frame up and enter for judging (Mine was a version of a Spanish style home that sits right across the street from the Community Center) At 3:30, the paintings were turned in for judging. While I didn't win a ribbon for my painting that afternoon, I counted it as a success since I'm feeling more comfortable painting within a set time frame, and it's good practice for the mere 90 minute quick draw events I'll be doing in the Telluride and Aspen Plein Air Invitationals in a few weeks! As the years go by, my "batting average" is certainly improving; scraping less and less of my efforts, and more often I'm quite happy with my studies! This I attribute to painting all the time from life, encouragement from the right people, and God's grace!
Art in the Pines: A Spring Art Festival & Sale

The Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve Docent Society and Torrey Pines Association present the fourth annual Art in the Pines to be held Saturday, May 4 from 10 to 5 and Sunday, May 5, 2013 from 10am to 4pm. The Festival is free and open to all and will be held at the Reserve just south of the Lodge.

Art in the Pines is a two-day event featuring a professionally judged (Scott Prior, well known plein air artist locally) plein air contest with an awards ceremony; artists’ booths exhibiting nature-inspired art for sale in a variety of media such as painting, pastels, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, and photography; food; live music (Mission Bay High School jazz trio, Sara Mussen, Minera Trio, Jen Hajj, Endangered Speciez band and Joe Marillo on sax); children’s art activities; a raffle and silent auction; guided nature walks; tours of the historic Torrey Pines Lodge; and expert demonstrations in painting and basket weaving.

This year, for the first time, artist participation has been open to all California residents. This juried art show features over 50 artists from well-known masters of the landscape to new talent.

The Art in the Pines festival provides opportunities for individuals, community organizations, foundations and businesses to support children’s nature programs at the Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve. That model program serves 4,000 children in the San Diego area every year with an exemplary outdoor experience tied to the school curriculum.

The event is free, but there is a charge for parking. The Reserve has two parking lots, South Beach and North Beach. The lot closest to the Art in the Pines event is the South Beach Lot where there will be preferred parking for $20 per car during the event. You will not be able to use annual passes of any kind on Saturday and Sunday, May 4 and 5, in the South Lot. In the North Lot, you will be able to use passes on those 2 days or the charge is $10 per car. A free shuttle will run frequently from both lots. For safety reasons, bikes will not be allowed on the reserve's road that connects both lots during the May 4th and 5th weekend. Instead, you may enjoy walking to the event. It is a fifteen minute walk from the South Beach Parking Lot.

Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve is located between La Jolla and Del Mar, California, north of San Diego. From Hwy 5, exit on Carmel Valley Road and drive west for about 1.5 miles till you reach the Coast Highway 101. Turn left and proceed along the beach for about a mile. The park entrance is on your right just before the highway begins to climb the Torrey Pines grade. The street address is 12600 North Torrey Pines Road, San Diego CA 92037.

Bill is a soft spoken, friendly man, and very easy to talk to. When we met, he had just begun to explore painting after retirement, and enjoyed the company of other artists. He and I have remained friends, even after I moved from the Foundry, and have frequently met for coffee or lunch here in Carlsbad.

About a year ago, we met for coffee at a nearby cafe' where Bill's artwork was displayed. I took Bill's photo as he told stories of earlier times in his life. I felt so honored to know this gentleman, who's life experiences (some of them quite devastating) have not made him hardened and calloused, but instead humbled and gentle. He is a dear friend, and I am blessed to have been touched by him.

Recently, a friend and fellow artist was visiting and commented that she really liked my gouache works. Truly, I love gouache, but use it primarily for studies for larger oil paintings. ( I hadn't thought to market them on my website) So here they sit, stacked up in my studio, unframed and hidden from public view. Well, all that's changed now and I've posted quite a few of them on my website this morning for sale! They are all very reasonably priced and can be shipped to you; ready to frame! Here are a couple of them; the rest are in the "Gouache Miniature Gallery" found on my website. www.ritapacheco.com

I seriously had not bitten into one of these Hostess treats in probably 40 years until last Saturday! I had seen a post on Facebook that Hostess Brands, the maker of Twinkies, HoHos and Wonder Bread, said it was going out of business after failing to get wage and benefit cuts from thousands of its' striking bakery workers.

Most importantly, over 18,000 people will lose their jobs because of the closure-this is the true tragedy!

But also, the event brought this tasty treat to the forefront of my mind. There was a time in my life where I so enjoyed this particular snack. I remember biting into that soft golden bread with it's creamy and uber sweet filling, and life was good! Now, my parents did not include a snack of this sort often in our sack lunches, and while I show a soda wrapped in foil (to keep it's temperature down), this was also a rare occurrence. This would have been reserved for special days at school where a field trip was planned. For some reason, my mom must have been regularly including a Twinkie in my lunches (who knows, maybe because I told her I LOVED them!) and, as I said, life was very good! This came to a crashing end when one of the other parents who was supervising the school yard informed her that I was throwing everything except the Twinkie in the trash so I could hurry out to play. Imagine that!

Fast forward to Saturday morning when I decided I was going to paint one (after all, when would I have another chance at it?!) The Twinkie package was on sale at the grocery store for $1 (not $50 as some alarmists would have you believe) and of course the tonic water I had on hand in my pantry served quite well as a "soda" once I wrapped it in foil. The paper bag was tricky; did you know they don't sell paper "lunch bags" any more? That was easily solved since they give them to you for free if you ask for one at the check out. ;)

I certainly enjoyed painting "Twinkies", and hope you will consider making a bid on this painting to benefit the American Red Cross in it's Hurricane Sandy Relief! Copy and paste to your browser:

My husband and I spent the week of the 4th of July in glorious Telluride, Colorado, at the prestigious Sheridan Telluride Plein Air Invitaional. We stayed right in town, and enjoyed the convenience of being within walking, biking or gondola distance to any location in town. With the exception of this first image, "Telluride Wine Festival" 12"h by 16"w with my bicycle in the foreground, all of the following paintings were done "en plein air" during the event. The weather was unpredictable to say the least, but the scenes to capture were at every corner, and it was a delight to be there! The plein air paintings that are still available will also be published soon on the Telluride Plein Air website www.telluridepleinair.com, with 40% of the proceeds going to the Sheridan Arts Foundation. (this portion is a tax deduction for you!)

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; font-weight: normal;">After a great week of painting the beautiful City of San Clemente "en plein air", I submitted my two favorites for the Plein Air Competition Saturday morning. I chose "El Ranchito" and "Morning at Casa Romantica". This year, the weather was extremely cooperative, and I was blessed with the gift of time to spend almost every morning or afternoon painting.

I was thrilled and honored to have received a First Place Ribbon at the Awards Reception/Gala! For more photos, see: http://www.ocregister.com/articles/clemente-360510-art-san.html

The submitted entries will be on display until August 3rd in the San Clemente Art Gallery (also located in the Community Center)

This year, I will be participating in the Art in the Pines, in LaJolla, California. Saturday, May 5, 10:00am-5:00pm and Sunday, May 6, 10:00am-4:00pm. "Art in the Pines" is a celebration of nature through the interpretive eyes of many local artists. These are some of the works that I will be offering (and they will be offered at a bit of a discount by the way). 35% of artwork sales will go to the Torrey Pines Association, and will benefit the children's nature educational programs. I hope you can make it by while the preserve's wildflowers are in full bloom!Ritahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14952480892886357601noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1248199718444897779.post-34132506482585870492012-01-13T12:07:00.000-08:002012-03-03T11:37:35.661-08:00In Front of Buffalo Brothers Guitars in Carlsbad, California

Since my husband and I moved to Carlsbad a few years ago, I've been admiring this beautiful old tractor that's displayed in front of Buffalo Brother's Guitars, Bobby's Hideaway Cafe and a flower shop on El Camino Real. Finally a few weeks ago, I brought a student to the location and we began to paint it from life. (en plein air) The weather has been absolutely glorious this winter in Carlsbad, so I was able to go back today to finish it! I spoke with Marja Selna today, who is the daughter of the original property owners here. Her parents were egg ranchers; collecting, cleaning, packaging and selling their eggs to nearby businesses. This business was sold to Olson Farms. In 1970, they opened up a Country Store (which is why local Carlsbadians sometimes refer to the area as "the Country Store") , but now Marja primarily manages the property which is rented to other businesses.
Years ago, Marja's dad had admired the tractor at the nearby Wiegand farm, and eventually he obtained it. For years, he kept it in good repair and repainted it red, and here it sits as a true historical representation of a time gone by in Carlsbad, California..
I entered the painting in the Carlsbad Oceanside Art League's "Members' Exhibit" this spring, and it was awarded First Place in Oil/Acrylic Category. The judge for this show was Greg LaRock, one of my favorite plein air painters, so that was a real honor!Ritahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14952480892886357601noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1248199718444897779.post-19336094806248053412011-12-06T15:23:00.001-08:002012-01-07T08:31:25.788-08:00Oceanside Museum of Art Artist Alliance Juried Exhibit

The Oceanside Museum of Art will be presenting work by the Oceanside Museum of Art Artist Alliance for the first time ever! Of more than 240 items submitted from local artists, only 28 were selected due to space restraints. I am honored that two of my local Southern California landscape paintings were juried into this special exhibit.
